Zorin Linux – As a Windows OS (and MacOS) Replacement

This article has been edited and updated from the original 2014 article. Zorin Linux makes a great Windows OS replacement and now even MacOS replacement. Seven years later and I’m more confident about this recommendation.

In the past, you’ve probably heard about or been affected by the retirement of Windows XP support on April 8, 2014, and then after January 14, 2020, Microsoft also dropped support for Windows 7.

Update: On April 27, 2023, Microsoft announced that the 22H2 release would be the last iteration of Windows 10. Consequently, there won’t be any further versions of this OS. The support for Windows 10 version 22H2 is scheduled to conclude on October 14, 2025. After this date, Windows 10 will cease to receive support, marking a full decade since its debut in 2015.

After testing and comparing Linux distributions, I’ve concluded that one of the best Linux Distros when specifically trying to replace Windows (or macOS) with something similar is Zorin Linux.

However, if you are not looking to keep the Windows-like or MacOS-like look and feel, read this post instead: Best Linux Distros for Beginner, Experienced and Expert users.

Zorin Linux: Windows Replacement

Zorin Linux - Windows Replacement

Zorin OS is a Ubuntu-based Linux distribution designed specifically for newcomers to Linux. It has a Microsoft Windows-like or MacOS-like graphical user interface and includes many apps similar to Windows.

You can choose (Start -> System tools -> Zorin Look Manager) between Window classic or Windows modern desktop look. Zorin Linux also comes with Wine, which lets users run many Windows applications on Linux.

The distribution’s ultimate goal is to provide a Linux alternative to Windows while allowing users to enjoy Linux within a familiar desktop environment.

Zorin Linux: macOS Replacement

Zorin OS - MacOS-like

Sometime after this article was initially published, Zorin Linux has also focused on offering their OS as a macOS replacement. Zorin OS is great for users who prefer to keep a similar Windows or Mac experience while benefiting from Linux’s stability, security, and low cost (often free) to maintain.

Zorin Linux emerges as a standout choice for those seeking solace from the discontinuation of Windows support or the allure of MacOS with a twist. With its roots firmly planted in the user-friendly ethos of Ubuntu, Zorin Linux transcends mere replacement, offering a sanctuary of familiarity coupled with the unparalleled benefits of Linux—stability, security, and an economically sound maintenance ecosystem.

This article persistently maintains its recommendation of Zorin Linux as a viable alternative to Windows OS, even a decade after its initial publication. It’s evident that Zorin Linux is not just keeping pace but setting a new standard for what an operating system can offer, blending the essence of Windows and MacOS.
